milestone81 is a Japanese brand that develops high-performance headlamps and trail running gear, designed for outdoor sports and active lifestyles. The brand was founded by Shuhei Nishioka, the “younger brother” of the third generation of the family behind Fujitoki Co., Ltd., a traditional lighting company based in Osaka, Japan.

Fujitoki Co., Ltd. was founded in 1920. The name combines “Fuji,” representing Japan’s iconic mountain, and “Toki,” meaning lamp. In the early days, the company manufactured carbide lamps using acetylene gas, originally intended for miners. These durable and functional lamps soon found popularity among anglers and street vendors as well..

As the younger brother of the third generation and a passionate outdoorsman, Shuhei Nishioka took the family’s expertise in lighting and began developing headlamps for mountain use. This idea became the foundation of Milestone81, with gear designed for hiking, trail running and fastpacking, all developed with the same technical precision and Japanese design philosophy inherited from generations past.

We, Kylian and Thijs, founded Milestone81 Europe in 2024, inspired by our active lives in the Austrian Alps and a shared belief in the power of nature to bring mind clarity, connection, and personal growth.

Our journey began not only in the mountains, but also in our fascination with Japan’s rich culture and its unique approach to craftsmanship, simplicity and innovation. When we discovered Milestone81, a Japanese headlamp brand with a century of heritage and deep family roots, it immediately resonated with our own values and vision.

In 2024, we officially partnered with Milestone81 and brought the brand to Europe under the name Milestone81 Europe. While we remain deeply respectful of the brand’s origin, story and identity, we also aim to give it a distinct European touch—adding our voice, local perspective and lifestyle without ever losing sight of the heritage and values that make Milestone81 so special.
